Unconstrained web-based color naming experiment

چکیده
This paper describes an ongoing web-based approach to collecting color names or color categories. Previous studies have tended to require a large number of observations from a small number of observers. These studies have also tended to limit responses to one-word or monolexical replies. Many studies have also focused on response time or levels of intra-observer agreement in order to identify focal colors. This web-based study uses a distributed design to collect a small number of names from a large number of observers. The responses are neither limited to nor restricted from being monolexical. The focal color analysis is then based on statistical analysis of monolexcially named colors. This paper presents the methodology and infrastructure, as well as considerations for data analysis. Finally, preliminary results of the experiment are results are considered. The data from over 700 participants results in CIELAB hues and lightnesses for the basic colors that agree with previous investigations as well as those investigations agree with each other. “Artists can color the sky red because they know it's blue. Those of us who aren't artists must color things the way they really are or people might think we're stupid.” Jules Feiffer “Where does the violet tint ends and the orange tint begins? Distinctly we see the difference of the colors, but where exactly does the one first blending enter into the other.” Herman Melville

Applications of a Color-Naming Database
An ongoing web-based color naming experiment has collected a small number of unconstrained color names from a large number of observers. This has resulted in a large database of color names for a coarse sampling of red, green and blue display values. This paper builds on a previous paper, that demonstrated the close agreement for this technique to earlier results for the basic colors, and prese...
متن کاملDifferences in Color Naming and Color Salience in Vietnamese and English
The accepted model of color naming postulates that 11 “basic” color terms representing 11 common perceptual experiences show increased processing salience due to a theorized linkage between perception, visual neurophysiology, and cognition. We tested this theory, originally proposed by Berlin and Kay in 1969. Experiment 1 tested salience by comparing unconstrained color naming across two langua...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Model of the Categorical Association Between Colors
In this paper we describe a non-parametric probabilistic model that can be used to encode relationships in color naming datasets. This model can be used with datasets with any number of color terms and expressions, as well as terms from multiple languages. Because the model is based on probability theory, we can use classic statistics to compute features of interest to color scientists. In part...
متن کاملThe visual-auditory color-word stroop asymmetry and its time course.
Four experiments examined crossmodal versions of the Stroop task in order (1) to look for Stroop asymmetries in color naming, spoken-word naming, and written-word naming and to evaluate the time course of these asymmetries, and (2) to compare these findings to current models of the Stroop effect. Participants named color patches while ignoring spoken color words presented with an onset varying ...
متن کاملThe Use of Modifying Terms in the Naming and Categorization of Color Appearances in Vietnamese and English
Cross-cultural studies of color naming show that basic terms are universally the most frequently used to name colors. However, such basic color terms are always used in the context of larger linguistic systems when speci c properties of color experience are described. To investigate naturalistic naming behaviors, we examined the use of modi ers in English and Vietnamese color naming using an ...
